Introduction

This blog is specifically designed as a teaching resource for primary school teachers, specifically for those teaching mathematics to grades one, two and three. This blog can be used as a guide when teaching the topic "measurement.

We have designed 8 activities that are suitable for 6-9 years old and the activities are listed in no specific order, but can be chosen in any order and also according to your preference. Detailed lesson plans for each activity is included, along with pictures that can help in conducting the sessions and also activity sheets, hand outs (if any) are provided as well, that can be accessed for free. A list of online games and online videos on measurement have also been compiled for your, with just a click away.

Parents can also use this blog as a guide to conduct these activities at home.

Both standard and non-standard ways of measurement is explored within these activities, with creative and interesting activities that matches the specified age group.

Further details to each activity is provided with each activity. We will be adding more resources as we go by, please keep checking.

Please feel free to post comments regarding any questions or feedback that you may have regarding any activity. Your comments are much appreciated.

If you wish to obtain any of our lesson plans and/or worksheets in their editable format, feel free to e-mail us at measurement4teachers@gmail.com with your request. We will be more than happy to help you. You can also save them straight from our blog, as an image.

Enjoy our blog and have fun conducting these activities at school/home.

Thank you :)

Activity 1: Standard Measurement

Let's Learn How to Use a Ruler!

This activity can be used as a starting point to introduce measurement with standard measurement tools. It focuses on the most basic standard measurement tool, which is the ruler.

Objective:

Students will learn how to use and read a ruler in standard measurement units.

Activity:

Draw or paste pictures of different readings of rulers and explain how to read a basic ruler in centimeters.
Then demonstrate how to measure the length of a linear object within the classroom (eg: Text book) and ask the students to do the same with their notebooks using their rulers.
Finally have them do the activity sheet for further practice.

Detailed Lesson Plan and Activity Sheet can be viewed below.

Activity 2: Standard Measurement

Let's Measure the Objects in Our Class!

This is an activity that can be done at any classroom or at home, all you need is a ruler, measuring tape and some child friendly scale. We are going to learn how to measure length, width, height and weight of objects in the classroom . Since this activity requires energy and lots of moving around, it is likely to interest children at this age and keep them excited.

Objective:

Students will learn the use of different standard measurement tools.

Activity:

Conduct a demonstration on measuring objects within the classroom using standard measurement units such as ruler, measuring tape and scale.
Conduct a group activity where the students have to measure different objects use those tools and complete an activity sheet where they have to note down their measurements and also compare them with one another.

Detailed Lesson Plan and Activity Sheet can be viewed below.

See the link below for a fun game to children to apply their knowledge from this activity.

Activity 3: Standard Measurement

Let's Compare Measurements!

This activity primarily focuses on teaching students how to compare the size of objects looking at their measurements. This activity can be done following any activity that teaches students how to measure using standard tools.

Objective:

Students will learn how to use compare and order length in standard measurement units.

Activity:

Explain the ordering of measurements from smallest number to highest number (whether its in cm or in kg) using flashcards of objects with their length or weight indicated (as shown in the picture above). Explain that while ordering measurements, the unit has to be the same.
Distribute the flashcards to the students randomly and ask the student with the lowest number to paste the first flashcard on the board and other students to follow as such. Instruct that the ordering should be from shortest to the longest for units in cm and lightest to the heaviest for units in kg and finally have them complete an activity sheet where they have to order measurements.
