Activity 3: Standard Measurement

Let's Compare Measurements!

This activity primarily focuses on teaching students how to compare the size of objects looking at their measurements. This activity can be done following any activity that teaches students how to measure using standard tools.

Objective:

Students will learn how to use compare and order length in standard measurement units.

Activity:

Explain the ordering of measurements from smallest number to highest number (whether its in cm or in kg) using flashcards of objects with their length or weight indicated (as shown in the picture above). Explain that while ordering measurements, the unit has to be the same.
Distribute the flashcards to the students randomly and ask the student with the lowest number to paste the first flashcard on the board and other students to follow as such. Instruct that the ordering should be from shortest to the longest for units in cm and lightest to the heaviest for units in kg and finally have them complete an activity sheet where they have to order measurements.

Detailed Lesson Plan and Activity Sheet can be viewed from below.
